Children today spend, on average, half as much time outside as children did thirty years ago.

Though our time in nature is decreasing, its importance to our well-being isn't. In fact, many studies* indicate that spending time in nature is beneficial to us in a variety of ways. This is especially true for children.

When Bessie Heard founded Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary in 1967 at the age of 80, her foresight was keen. She realized that someday natural spaces would not be as prevalent. She saw that one day there may be a need to conserve a special place for people to spend time in and learn about nature. "Miss Bessie" (as the children called her) knew that natural spaces were important and should be shared with future generations.

Forty-seven years later, in keeping with Miss Bessie's vision, the Heard consists of a 289 acre wildlife sanctuary and a natural science museum for the primary purpose of educating children about the appreciation of nature and its conservation.

North Texas Giving Day is an online giving event that provides nonprofits the opportunity to gain exposure to — and start relationships with — new donors, and for people in North Texas to come together to raise as much money as possible for local nonprofits. Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary is participating in this event and we would appreciate your support! If you've been thinking about making a gift to the Heard to help our mission to bring nature and people together, now is a great time--donations $25 and above will be amplified by bonus funds.

If you would like a reminder to participate on the day of the event, please submit this very short form.
