    Butterfly Talk: Creating Your Butterfly Nursery

    Gardening for Butterflies

    Preparing for a butterfly “baby” (caterpillar) is much easier than preparing for a human baby. At this talk, you’ll learn how to prepare your “nursery” (garden) for the next generation of beautiful butterflies. No experience? No problem. We’ll walk you through the basics, including what butterflies will lay eggs on, what the caterpillars need to eat and how to support their parents.

    This program is included in general admission and free for Heard Museum Members. Designed primarily for adults. Interested youth may attend with an adult. May not be suitable for children younger than 10 years.

  • Heard After Hours: Star Party

    Our beautiful night sky is a disappearing resource!  Find out why at our Magic Planet exhibit and then head outside to view the spring constellations and the one-day-old moon, along with varying star clusters and nebulae. Perhaps Mars will even put in an appearance above our western tree line! A telescope station and binocular station will be provided, family-friendly activities will be available near the viewing area, and the exhibit hall will be open.

    Guests are welcome to bring lawn/camp chairs or waterproof seating, as well as snacks or a picnic to enjoy at designated areas. Long-pants and closed-toed shoes highly recommended. Children ages 18 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

    Please be advised that unhampered night vision is critical for everyone’s enjoyment of a night-sky event. This means that headlamps are not permitted and that flashlights should be covered with red cellophane. (We’ll have the cellophane and rubber bands available).

  • Second Saturday Bird Walk

    Monthly Bird Walks at the Heard The Heard Museum and Prairie & Timbers Audubon Society (PTAS) offer guided bird walks on the Heard Sanctuary. Walks begin promptly at 8 AM and last 1.5 hours (with optional extended time if some participants are interested). If you come a few minutes late the group may have already started their walk so it is important to be on time. Walks are included in regular admission and free for Heard Museum members. These bird walks are intended to help beginning and intermediate birders with bird spotting and identification techniques. There will also be plenty of opportunity for questions. Prairie, woodland, and wetland habitats are included in these walks.

    Walk on Team Heard as we work to show the nation that DFW can boast the most species of wildlife as part of the City Nature Challenge! We’ll have “coaches” on hand to help you learn how to score points for the Metroplex as you ID species of wildlife on the Heard’s 289-acre sanctuary. You will only need to show up with a smart phone with the iNaturalist app and your love of nature. AT 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., you'll also have an opportunity to go on a nature walk at 1:30 pm and 3pm with Melanie Schuchart, Heard entomology volunteer and Master Naturalist, to look for butterflies and other insects.   • Second Saturday Bird Walk

    Monthly Bird Walks at the Heard The Heard Museum and Prairie & Timbers Audubon Society (PTAS) offer guided bird walks on the Heard Sanctuary. Walks begin promptly at 8 AM and last 1.5 hours (with optional extended time if some participants are interested). If you come a few minutes late the group may have already started their walk so it is important to be on time. Walks are included in regular admission and free for Heard Museum members. These bird walks are intended to help beginning and intermediate birders with bird spotting and identification techniques. There will also be plenty of opportunity for questions. Prairie, woodland, and wetland habitats are included in these walks.
