Exhibit Manager & Curator
This leadership position within the Heard Museum is responsible for coordinating all aspects of exhibition development, supervising an animal department, revolving exhibitions program and collections management. Emphasizing a collaborative, hands-on approach to managing a highly diverse and talented group of colleagues is critical.
Basic Function and Responsibilities including but not limited to:
- Coordinate all aspects of the institution’s exhibit development activities and assures all stakeholders are involved in the process including adjunct curators, designers, educators, marketing, public affairs and development staff.
- Manage full-time professional staff and volunteers involved primarily with exhibition fabrication and the set-up and take down of exhibitions.
- Assist Ed. Dept. with planning and coordinating education activities with exhibitions.
- Coordinate staff activities in the development of 1-2 exhibits in-house and on Sanctuary as well as 6-10 collections display showcases.
- Manage all Live Animal Exhibits via Animal Care Manager and volunteer animal care staff.
- Work closely with the Education Coordinator to assure effective interface with design in all projects and education programming.
- Serve as a project manager on complex museum-wide projects that may fall outside the scope of exhibitions including 289 acres and 3 buildings.
- Work with museum staff on developing new exhibition ideas and continual improvement of current exhibition areas.
- Work with exhibit technicians from the museum’s Operations Facilities Staff when needed to help maintain the museum’s permanent exhibits.
- Negotiate contracts with ED to secure traveling exhibitions
- Give input and prepare to write exhibit content for state, federal, local and national foundation grants.
- Prepare budgets, organization plans and calendars for all departmental activities.
Qualifications:
- Extensive experience in exhibition development with a portfolio of successful projects.
- Degree in museum studies, management, science, history or related field preferred.
- Leadership qualities including good communication and organizational skills, knowledge of organizational dynamics, ability to work well in group settings.
- Progressive, innovative attitude with an ability to explore and pursue fresh, unconventional approaches and new ideas related to exhibition presentation.
- Team-oriented perspective and a philosophy that honors the viewpoints and skills of others who participate in exhibition development.

Wildlife Sanctuary Manager
JOB DESCRIPTION
Employee in this job functions as a professional lead biologist with responsibility of managing 289 acres within the Heard Wildlife Sanctuary composed of wetland, bottomland forest, riparian, blackland prairie, and escarpment habitat.
JOB DUTIES
Plan, schedule, and implement all habitat and wildlife management enhancement practices.
Budget time and resources necessary to effectively manage the wildlife sanctuary.
Develop and implement blackland prairie restoration practices.
Develop, maintain, and coordinate volunteer programs (includes nest box , bird banding, nest camera, and college outreach program).
Become functioning team member for the Heard Habitat Consultancy (environmental consulting within north Texas and south Oklahoma).
Maintain trail system infrastructure and other recreational public use areas.
Become the Heard’s professional liaison between the public and professionally related organizations.
Participate in event and exhibit planning, development, and set up.
Organize, participate in, or conduct pertinent scientific research within the sanctuary
Operate and become familiar with farm equipment and implements (tractor, harrows, planters, disk, etc.)
Supervise sanctuary assistant
WORKING CONDITIONS
Strenuous outdoor work in inclement weather should be expected
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to regularly lift 80 pounds and be able to use chainsaws and operate and hook up heavy equipment.
Operate and become familiar with farm equipment and implements (tractor, harrows, planters, disk, etc.)
SPECIALIZED SKILLS
Not mandated but sought after – permitted bird bander, use of Arc Map & GIS, chemical applicators license, farming experience (seed bed creation, planting, invasive and exotic plant control)
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Possess a bachelor’s degree in wildlife biological sciences or similar field with the majority of the courses being in any of the following (plant science, agronomy, biology, zoology, ecology, entomology, ornithology, mammalogy, range management, botany) plus four years of work experience in land management/biology or relevant field.

We are looking for a few good teachers! Do you have a flexible schedule? Do you enjoy working with children and nature? Then we have a job for you. We are looking for contract educators to lead scout workshops, guided nature trails, field labs, hands on activities, live animal presentations, science classes and much more. Applicant should have a strong positive attitude, some teaching experience, a love for the outdoors, and children. Training is provided and will take place in September.

Now hiring contract sleepover staff!
We are looking for a few good leaders! The Heard offers sleepover events and we are in need of two people for this program. This is a contract as needed position. A good attitude, positive thinking, a love for the outdoors and children are a must, teaching experience is helpful but not necessary. Sleepovers start at 6pm in the evening and are completed by 10am the following morning. Training is provided and will take place in September.
