  • Magical Moth Night

    Jul 28th, 2018
    8:00pm - 11:00pm
Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary

    Tickets

Experience the magic of moths. These insects are often thought of as being less interesting than their popular lepidopteran cousins, butterflies. But on this night, we’ll dispel this myth and show you the fascinating, flitting world of these winged beauties. Not only are they important pollinators, but they are also excellent indicators of the health of their natural environments.

Magical Moth Night will begin at 8:00pm with Melanie Schuchart, one of our key entomology volunteers, giving an insightful talk about these amazing creatures. After the talk, our trail guides will lead you into the sanctuary to experience the Heard’s nature at night. Your guided hike will end at one of the observation stations, where you’ll be able to study moths firsthand through the use of non-lethal catch and release methods. The diversity of what you will find may come as surprise!

This event will also feature our new 4-foot diameter Magic Planet digital global display as it illustrates the night sky in a whole new way. Light snacks and family-friendly activities, such as face/arm painting and exhibit hall admission, will be included.

    Tickets

$19/non-member; $16/Heard Museum Members* (Age 3 years through adult).

Closed toed shoes, long pants, and bug spray are recommended. Participants will be outdoors for at least an hour.

Children ages 18 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Hikes are at least an hour long and include varied terrain and may not be suitable for children under 5 years. Admission for toddlers and infants 2 years and under is free, but they must be in a carrier or backpack. Strollers are prohibited.

    Sep 7th, 2018
    7:00pm - 10:00pm
Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary

Why should kids get to have all of the dinosaur fun? Join us for a special adults-only evening filled with dinosaur-themed activities to celebrate the opening week of our 13th Annual Dinosaurs Live! Life-Size Animatronic Dinosaurs exhibit.

Enjoy a guided hike around the dinosaur exhibit trail with Heard trail guides. You’ll get to participate in a hands-on make and take craft project and receive a fossil to take home, too. You’ll also learn about new things paleontologists have discovered about dinosaurs since the days you learned about them as a kid. During a presentation with a Heard animal ambassador, we’ll also talk about what makes lizards different from dinosaurs. This event will feature our new 4-foot diameter Magic Planet digital global display as it illustrates the Earth’s geology during the time of the dinosaurs.

$19/non-member; $16/Heard Museum Members* (Ages 18+). Pre-registration is required. Click here to register.

Closed toed shoes, long pants, and bug spray are recommended. Participants will be outdoors for approximately an hour.

About Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary

The Heard was founded in 1967 by Bessie Heard. Miss Heard was 80 years old when she saw the need to preserve a place where future generations could experience nature. Today, the Heard's mission of bringing nature and people together to discover, enjoy, experience, restore, and preserve our priceless environment is carried out through education, particularly of young people, which emphasizes an appreciation of nature and its conservation.  For more information, visit heardmuseum.org.
