Spring Break Mini Camps

Overview

Have a fun Spring Break close to home

Less than 10 miles from downtown McKinney and only 30 miles from the heart of Dallas, it is the perfect location for a daytrip.

The Heard has shaded picnic facilities, 289 acres of varied eco-systems with miles of hiking trails running through them, a variety of special programs and exhibits, and much more. Plus, during Spring Break, we offer special programs for a variety of ages. Learn more below.

Covid-19 Considerations

  • Masks are required for all campers & staff.
  • Social distancing will be practiced in each camp room and when outside as much as possible.
  • A health screening that may include a temperature check will be done at check-in.
  • Only staff & campers will be allowed into the building/classroom areas and a one-way path with will be used for drop-off/pick-up.
  • All touch items will be single use and disinfected between uses (pencils, markers, scissors, etc.).
  • High touch areas will be disinfected before and after each camp.
  • Hand sanitizer and hand soap will be available at all times.

Mini-Camps

Each mini-camp explores a different topic, a hike on the sanctuary, and more. Preregistration required. Participants should dress for the weather and wear closed-toe shoes suitable for walking on uneven gravel. Participants should also bring water in a carrier. Pre-registration is required.

Kindergarten –  6th Grade*

March 6, March 8 & March 10; 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.

*children that were ages 5-12 on Sept. 1, 2022 

We will search the sanctuary for signs that spring is coming as we discuss what plants and animals do as winter turns to spring.

What makes a reptile a reptile? How are they different from other animal groups? What reptiles do we have here in Texas? We’ll explore these and other questions as we meet some of our live education reptiles and touch some of our specimens.

Why are pollinators like butterflies and bees so important to nature? We’ll learn more about these fascinating insects and some things we can do to support them.

Special Monday Hours: March 6
