Summer Mini Camp – August 1 – Shake, Rattle, & Roll

What can make the ground shake? What can shoot rocks high into the sky and even change the weather around the world? Discover how events like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions have change the landscape, and how studying them have helped us learn more about the earth.

Each mini-camp explores a different topic, a hike on the sanctuary, a live animal visitor (no contact), and a take-home project. Preregistration required. Did you know that we live in one of the most endangered ecosystems? What is its name and which plants and animals make it their home? Who hunts other animals and who eats only plants? Find out as we spend time exploring the restored prairie remnants on the sanctuary.

Winter Mini Camp: A Tour of the Solar System

Journey through our Solar System and beyond! This camp will use the GeoGlobe, a digital interactive globe, to explore the unique characteristics of the planets and other objects seen in our night sky. We’ll also spend time outdoors exploring the fascinating characteristics of the planet we know best – the Earth!

Ages K – 6th grade (5 – 12 years)

Winter Mini Camp: Making Tracks

How do we know what animals live here at the Heard? What signs and tracks do they leave for us to find?

We’ll take a hike outside and see what evidence of different animals we can find. And we’ll make some of our own tracks or signs to take home.

Winter Mini Camp: Feathered Friends

What happens to birds in the winter? What is migration and do all birds do it? What do birds eat? And who flies the fastest?

We’ll investigate these and other things about birds. Everyone will also get to make a feeder they can take home to share with their feathered friends.

Winter Mini Camp: Diggin’ Dinos

What dinosaurs lived around here? Did all dinosaurs live at the same time? What other animals lived with the dinosaurs? We’ll spend some time digging into these and other dinosaur and fossil questions. We’ll go outside and explore the Dinosaurs Live! exhibit and find out about what fossils we find here. Everyone will also get their own fossil to keep.
